The Wonderful Benefits of Babywearing: Why Babies Love It!

Writer: Jade LawrenceJade Lawrence

At the Cheshire Sling Library, we’ve seen firsthand how babywearing can transform life for parents and little ones. It’s not just about keeping your hands free—although that’s certainly a bonus!

Babywearing is about connection, comfort, and creating a beautiful bond that supports your parenting journey in the most natural and loving way.

As a Birth and Postnatal Doula for the past eight years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting new and expectant parents in discovering the joys and benefits of babywearing. But my own journey into baby wearing started 35 years ago, with the birth of my first son, It was truly a game-changing parenting tool, offering incredible benefits for both of us by keeping him close.

Babywearing not only supported our deep bond and a sense of security but also proved to be an efficient and practical solution for navigating life in London, especially on public transport.

As he grew older, I carried him on my back, and he continued to love feeling close, safe, snug and secure. I went on to carry all five of my children, from their newborn days through to preschool age, cherishing the connection and convenience it brought.

Over the years, I’ve shared my passion for babywearing by supporting other parents through my organised Sling Meets and Sling Libraries in our local London community, passing on the knowledge and joy of this wonderful practice.

My eldest son has continued to embrace the benefits of babywearing by carrying his own little one—my grandson, Reuben—in slings and carriers. Now two years old, Reuben has loved the experience just as much, finding comfort and connection while being carried close. It’s heartwarming to see babywearing passed down through generations, continuing to create special bonds and cherished moments.

So whether you’re new to babywearing or already love the magic of keeping your little one close, let’s explore the many benefits that make this practice so special.

1. Bonding and Comfort

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of having your baby close to your heart—literally.

Babywearing provides skin-to-skin contact that helps strengthen the bond between you and your little one. For babies, this closeness offers security and comfort, often reducing crying and soothing them when they’re feeling unsettled. For parents, it’s a reminder of the deep connection you share, helping to foster confidence in your ability to meet your baby’s needs.

2. Hands-Free Freedom

Parenting is a busy job, and sometimes you need your hands free to tackle everyday tasks. Babywearing lets you keep your baby close while still managing chores, preparing meals, or simply enjoying a hot cup of tea (a luxury, we know!). It’s a lifesaver for multitasking parents who want to stay connected without feeling tied down.

3. Encourages Healthy Development

Carrying your baby in a sling or carrier isn’t just convenient—it’s great for their physical development too. A well-fitted carrier supports healthy hip development and keeps your baby in a natural ergonomic position. The upright posture can also aid digestion and reduce discomfort from reflux or colic, making life a little easier for everyone.

4. Eases the Transition for Newborns

The world outside the womb can feel overwhelming for a newborn. Babywearing mimics the snug, warm environment they’re used to, helping them adjust to life on the outside with less stress. The rhythmic motion of walking and your familiar heartbeat provide a soothing environment that feels just right.

5. Supports Mental Wellbeing

For parents, babywearing can be a grounding experience. The closeness promotes the release of oxytocin, often called the “love hormone,” which can reduce stress and enhance feelings of happiness. Babywearing can be especially comforting during those challenging early days when sleep is scarce, and emotions are high.

6. A Lifesaver for Breastfeeding Parents

Did you know that babywearing can make breastfeeding more accessible? Many carriers allow for discreet, on-the-go feeding, making it easier to respond to your baby’s hunger cues. Plus, the closeness helps stimulate milk production, supporting a successful breastfeeding journey.

7. A Connection Beyond Babyhood

Babywearing isn’t just for newborns! As your child grows, toddler-wearing can be a practical and comforting way to navigate busy outings, family adventures, or times when your little one just needs extra reassurance.
